Profile Dr. Kerr is a widely published author and reviewer in the field of biomedical research, particularly in the areas of medical and drug information. Dr. Kerr is a widely experienced scientist and medical writer and has also worked as a reporter for the Lancet. Dr Kerr joined the Edanz Group in 2005 and brings with him many years of experience as a writer, biomedical copy editor, and as an abstracter and indexer for various drug companies and information services. Dr. Kerr has a particular interest in the field of Gastroenterology.
Dr Gerard Morris

Profile Dr Morris’s scientific background is oncology with an emphasis on radiobiology, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. During the period that he worked as a scientist and principal investigator at the University of Oxford, the focus of Dr Morris’s research was the development of new drugs and novel forms of radiotherapy for the treatment of cancer. More recently, Dr Morris has worked as a medical writer and scientist in the biotechnology industry. Therapeutic areas that he has been involved with include oncology, infectious diseases, age-related macular degeneration and obesity. Dr Morris currently has visiting scientist status at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in the USA and has written over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. Dr Morris began working with the Edanz Group in 2009.
Dr Arshad Makhdum

Profile Dr Mahkdum was a Research Fellow at University College London before becoming a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Scripps Institute at UCSD in California. Since 2000 Dr Makhdum has been a medical writer and editor holding various positions including Managing Editor at Elsevier in Oxford from 2005–2007. Dr Makhdum began working with the Edanz Group in 2008.
Dr David Thomas

Profile Dr. Thomas’s scientific background is in pharmacology and biochemistry, particularly in relation to pharmaceutical drug discovery. For his PhD he investigated the pharmacology of 5-HT7 (serotonin7) receptors and their role in brain function. Dr Thomas has published over 40 research papers, of which 11 were as primary or sole author, in international peer-reviewed journals. As a recognised expert in the field of 5-HT receptor pharmacology, he has written a book chapter on the role of the 5-HT7 receptor in sleep control and has peer-reviewed manuscripts submitted to a variety of pharmacology and neuroscience journals. He has also presented invited lectures at international conferences on 5-HT receptor pharmacology and drug discovery. He is a member of The British Pharmacological Society. Dr Thomas began working with the Edanz Group in early 2009.
Dr Anna Thompson

Profile Dr. Thompson's scientific background is in physiology with an emphasis on renal physiology/endocrinology, diabetes and reproduction. For her PhD she investigated the effects of steroid metabolism on renal function and as a Postdoctoral Fellow she focused on steroid metabolism. She also investigated the impact of glucose toxicity on intracellular signaling in diabetic animal models. Dr. Thompson has written numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and has over 5 years’ experience as a full-time medical writer in a wide range of topics including diabetes, gastroenterology, immunology, oncology and asthma. Dr Thompson began working with the Edanz Group in 2008.

Profile Dr Smith, a former researcher at the Queen Mary University of London’s Institute of Cellular and Molecular Sciences, is an expert in the biochemistry of diabetes and related metabolic disorders. Dr. Smith’s PhD thesis was entitled “The Role of PPARalpha in Modulating Glucose Tolerance and Insulin Action using In Vivo Models of Insulin Resistance”. Dr Smith was a Senior Medical Writer at the international communications company Medicus International before joining the Edanz Group full-time as Senior Medical Writer in April 2008.
Dr Daniel McGowan

Profile Dr. McGowan's research investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease, combining neuroanatomy, laser micro-dissection, microarray analysis and proteomics. With ten years of postgraduate and postdoctoral research experience, in both academia and industry, Dr McGowan has an in-depth knowledge of neurodegenerative diseases, neural function, molecular and cellular biology and protein biochemistry. After leaving the lab in 2005, Dr. McGowan worked as an Associate Editor at Nature Reviews Neuroscience, responsible for commissioning and developing articles and writing editorial content. Dr McGowan joined the Edanz Group part-time in late 2006, and has been a Science Director since April 2008.
Dr Martin Wallace

Profile Dr. Wallace’s background is in biochemistry and genetics. Later he focused on biomedical science/bioengineering, in particular, nerve regeneration in both the peripheral and central nervous systems. He has also worked as a Scientific Information Specialist for Thomson Scientific & Healthcare (2004–2006). In this position he was responsible for was responsible for analysing and extracting information from life science and biomedical articles to allow for seamless access to current and retrospective multidisciplinary information from approximately 8,700 high impact research journals from the Web of Science. He also worked as part of the quality control team for BIOSIS Previews, where he was required to write abstracts for scientific articles. Dr. Wallace began working with the Edanz Group in 2009.
Dr Rebecca Devon

Profile Dr. Devon is a biologist with a special interest in neuroscience and genetics. Her PhD was on the genetics of psychiatric illness. Since then, she has undertaken postdoctoral research on a rare inherited form of motor neurone disease (Lou Gehrig's Disease) in Vancouver, Canada, and Edinburgh, UK. She has written over 50 research papers, book chapters, reviews and grant applications, and has peer-reviewed manuscripts for molecular biology journals. Dr. Devon began working with the Edanz Group in 2008.
Dr Mary Cant

Profile Dr. Cant has been a Research Fellow (Pharmacology) at the University of Edinburgh and a Research Assistant at the University of London and the University of Oxford, as well as a Lecturer in Physiology at the University of Aberdeen where she also established an electrophysiology laboratory for investigation of drug effects on electrical activity in isolated mammalian cardiac ventricular cells. Dr. Cant also has extensive writing and editing experience, having edited papers in biological and physical sciences for the European Community CORDIS Results and Publications databases, as well as for the BEST (British Expertise in Science and Technology) database and its sister database in the US. From 1998 to 2007 Dr. Cant was a medical editor/database indexer for Thomson Scientific of the UK where she analyzed and extracted qualitative and statistical information on drug effects. Dr Cant began working with the Edanz Group in 2007.
Dr Krystyna Vocadlo

Profile Dr. Vocadlo is a chemist with six years experience in medicinal chemistry and drug product development in biotech companies. As a researcher she was involved in multi-step synthesis and spectroscopic analysis of compounds including experiment planning, execution, compound isolation, purification and identification. Dr. Vocadlo has also gathered and evaluated information, and then prepared regulatory submissions for NDA (New Drug Applications of the US FDA). As well as being a published first author, Dr. Vocadlo has extensive experience in technical writing and editing (theses, manuscripts, protocols and reports). Dr. Vocadlo began working with the Edanz Group in 2007.
Dr Renee Mosi

Profile Dr. Mosi’s PhD studies involved the mechanism of reaction of two alpha glycosyltransferases, glycogen phosphorylase and cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase, through the use of modified substrates and inhibitors. Dr. Mosi is a senior research scientist with 8 years experience in pharmaceutical drug research. She has developed and implemented novel assays for the purpose of the identification of inhibitors of metallo-enzymes as antibacterials and inhibitors of cysteine proteases for the treatment of cancer. Dr. Mosi has applied expertise in enzymology, receptor based cell biology, drug metabolism and protein purification and production. As well, she has designed and standardized systems and procedures for interpreting scientific results. She also has a sound knowledge of FDA guidelines and trained in GLP and GMP procedures. Dr. Mosi is a professional member of the Drug Information Association, International Society for the Study of Xenobiotics, Society for Biomolecular Screening, American Society of Microbiology, and the Canadian Society of Chemistry. As first author of 10 published, peer reviewed manuscripts, and as editor of numerous other papers in fields of biology, biochemistry, chemistry and pharmacology Dr. Mosi began working with the Edanz Group in 2007.
Dr Nina de Boo

Profile Dr. de Boo is a physiologist with a particular interest in fetal growth and metabolism. Her PhD thesis was entitled “Aspects of Nitrogen Metabolism in Intrauterine Growth Restriction” – focusing primarily on urea cycle disorders in growth restricted human neonates and fetal sheep. She has since completed a postdoctoral study on the development of intrauterine treatments for Intrauterine Growth Restriction by hormonal supplementation. Dr. de Boo has extensive experience in writing and editing both scientific and non-scientific manuscripts and is now a full-time freelance writer and editor. Dr de Boo began working with the Edanz Group in 2008.
Dr Stephen Cooke

Profile Dr. Cooke’s scientific background is immunology with an emphasis on human immune responses to organ transplants. His PhD focused on the functional significance of newly identified xenoantigens expressed by porcine endothelial cells. He has worked as a postdoctoral fellow for both the Arthritis and Rheumatism Council (ARC) and Cancer Research UK (CRUK). The main focus of his postdoctoral work was the engineering of antibody-based fusion proteins specifically targeted to cancer cells as a novel from of therapy. Dr Cooke has technical expertise in the design and use of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), PCR and RT-PCR, primary cell culture, cellular cytotoxicity assays, DNA isolation, purification, sequencing and cloning, HPLC, radiolabelling techniques, kinetic analysis of antibody:antigen interactions, antibody isolation and purification and the use of phage display technology. He is also a qualified Physiotherapist with extensive knowledge of human anatomy and physiology. Dr. Cooke began working with the Edanz Group in 2009.
