Case study: rewriting in response to peer review

The client

A leading Japanese academic research group with a long publication history in top-tier journals.

The problem

The client approached Edanz Writing in November 2008 after a study of theirs was rejected from a journal with a broad focus and an impact factor of 5.255, expressing a desire to publish their study in an appropriate journal.

The solution

Within three days of the order, the Edanz Writing team provided the client with an independent expert review of the manuscript and a detailed report listing a number of potential target journals, ranked in order of their appropriateness. The client was asked to provide additional information to address problems in the manuscript and to select a target journal from the list. Our writing team then rewrote the manuscript to ensure clarity and conciseness, to make it scientifically robust, and to comply with journal style requirements. One round of client feedback was included during the process to ensure that the rewritten text was accurate. The final draft was returned to the client along with a journal cover letter within two weeks of the initial order and submitted to the recommended journal, which had a more specific focus and an impact factor of 3.6.

The outcome

The submitted study was accepted by the target journal and published in October 2009.
